Storytelling is one of the most compelling tools we have to illustrate the power of overly complicated or abstract housing policies — putting people and their homes front and center. From the experience of navigating injustice to making change happen in unlikely places, this Renter Protections Storybook highlights three human-centered stories that demonstrate why our ability to thrive depends on the stability, health, and safety of our homes. The goal of this storybook is to help advocates, decision-makers, and the media better communicate what’s at stake for our communities, and how housing solutions can benefit all of us.

This book is the first to discuss, in practical and theoretical terms, the pedagogical approach of service-learning to establish partnerships for social good that build disaster resilience. Across 12 chapters a collection of academics and practitioners provide insights on the benefits of utilizing service-learning to address existing needs, build community capacity, and strengthen social networks while enhancing student learning.

In June 2020, Petaluma City Management held a Petaluma Policing Town Hall Virtual Meeting in response to the uprising for Black Lives and actions about policing and social justice. Many community members, and particularly BIPOC voices, felt that they were not heard. NBOP's Petaluma Table gathered community organizations to host a listening circle and forum that would hold space for voices from the BIPOC communities of Petaluma. Then, NBOP leaders and coalition members produced a report centering four recommendations for the City of Petaluma.

The disasters that struck Sonoma County in the last 2.5 years, and corresponding response by government and civil society, continue to exacerbate deep inequalities in our community. Environmental events are not inherently unjust. Rather, vulnerability to the effects of disaster are informed by gender, ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, special needs, age, housing tenure, and (most importantly) the ways in which government, philanthropy, and civil society respond to residents.

This fact sheet was created in partnership between PolicyLink, Bay Area Equity Atlas, and the North Bay Organizing Project to advance policies that protect renters at risk of eviction during the COVID-19 emergency. Key findings include:

• 7,000 Sonoma households – including 5,100 children – are at imminent risk of eviction and homelessness if the county's eviction moratorium is lifted because they include one or more workers who’ve lost their jobs and have no replacement income.
• An additional 4,400 households could be at risk of eviction once the $600 weekly Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation ends.

During the Kincade Fire in 2019, IDTF made an on-the-ground assessment of how the County applied our 2017 recommendations about their disaster response. This report card clearly shows the gaps still existing between what the County says it will do and what it actually does. The report card outlines policy recommendations and enforcement measures for a more equitable and just recovery during disasters.

Hundreds of people died from COVID-19 in Sonoma County during 2021 and 2022. At the beginning of the pandemic, the infection rate in the Latino community was nine times the rate of that among non-Latino people. IDTF members urged the County to make specific changes concerning the translation and distribution of information about COVID-19, the vaccines, and testing and vaccination sites. Some of our recommendations (insert link to documents) were adopted: information about testing centers was translated into Spanish, along with assurances that people's personal health information was not being shared with ICE.

The following recommendations came from these discussions led by the Immigrant Defense Task Force of NBOP and were endorsed by 15 community groups and organizations in the early months of 2018. Immigrant leaders from the Immigrant Defense Task Force made their rounds and went to over 25 meetings with individual County Supervisors, numerous County Agency Officials and Board of Supervisor meetings. And then to community presentations and policy efforts across the state. This report outlines recommendations made by immigrant people and allies on how the County response to future climate change-fueled disasters.
