Victory! NEW Sonoma County Renter Protections Pass First Reading 4-1

We are making HISTORY! Renters won this week as the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in a first reading of a NEW renter protection ordinance that includes:

  • Countywide disaster and emergency triggered renter protections including a moratorium on evictions

  • Just Cause in unincorporated areas that also prevents evictions for missing just 1 month rent

Who voted in support of the new renter protection ordinance?

  • Susan Gorin, District 1 – IN FAVOR

  • David Rabbit, District 2 – AGAINST

  • Chris Coursey, District 3 – IN FAVOR

  • James Gore, District 4 – IN FAVOR

  • Lynda Hopkins, District 5 – IN FAVOR

See where evictions are highest using Legal Aid of Sonoma County and the North Bay Organizing Project's 'Struggle For Home' story map.

To our knowledge, these emergency-triggered protections are the FIRST of their kind in the country. Once we are under a declared emergency, an eviction moratorium goes into effect, which will protect more renters – especially our most marginalized – from displacement.

This is why we organize! Thank you to the 30+ organizations who have supported this campaign from the beginning.

Join us for the next reading on Sept. 17, when we hope to pass these protections for good! Because when we organize, we win!
