Dear Comrades —
For many months now, NBOP's Immigrant Defense Task Force and a coalition of immigrant rights organizations have been advocating for a sanctuary ordinance to promote the dignity, health, and safety of immigrants in Sonoma County.
We believe our Board of Supervisors have the responsibility and opportunity to protect and defend immigrant people in our community. But they have not yet adopted the ordinance.
Now we are facing a huge threat – the real possibility of mass deportations, the mass trauma brought on by separating children from their parents, probable economic disruption, and devastation because of the loss of thousands of essential workers in agriculture, hospitality, child and elder care, and domestic services.
Despite their inaction, we know that together we have the opportunity to create sanctuary spaces across our community – including our schools, our churches, and our workplaces. We are reminded that we have the power to keep us safe.
Join us! On December 10 from 11-2, we will be hosting a people's party for a sanctuary county and show our community power and celebrate the leadership of immigrant people who call Sonoma County home. We will have a ceremonial opening, music, food, street art, and a Know Your Rights workshop.
Here's how to take action:
Please sign onto our open letter to the Supervisors before 4 pm on Monday, December 9 and send them a public comment as an individual. (Send your individual comments to bos@sonoma-county.org)
Insist that they adopt the ordinance and be proactive in supporting and defending immigrant people living in our county.
Click to read the ordinance and some talking points for your public comments.
Thank you very much for your solidarity,
Linda Evans on behalf of the Immigrant Defense Taskforce of NBOP
